Nanhe’s early education was at home. Maulvi Budan Khan taught him Urdu and other subjects. Ragunath Prasad, his uncle admitted Lal Bahadur to seventh standard in Harish Chandra High School, Banaras as 'Lal Bahadur Verma'. Lal Bahadur removed 'Verma' from his name. Nanhe learned a lot from his uncle that how he manages his big family within his meagre salary.
Nanhe was fond of swimming. Once he crossed flooded Ganges by swimming as he had no money to pay and also did not want to take help from his friends. He also refused to board another boat, which came to help him in crossing Ganges.
