On his sudden demise, the whole country was deeply shocked and plunged into grief. Leaders from all walks of life and dignitaries mourned the sad demise of Shastriji, the outstanding leader, who laid down his life at the altar of peace. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, said “Lal Bahadur Shastriji’s case is an illustration of the strength of democracy in this country. From humble beginnings, without any advantages of birth, position or wealth, he rose to the highest position in the government of the country. It is due entirely to his force of character and integrity of life. These thigs enabled him to rise to the top.”


Paying glowing tributes to Shastriji, Smt. Indira Gandhi, who succeeded him as the Prime Minister, said “…He was very polite in his nature and was very peaceful but at the time of war he encouraged our morale strongly, provided his leadership to the nation which contributed to the unity and strength of the country.”

The then Speaker, Lok Sabha, Sardar Hukam Singh, said” Lal Bahadur Shastri proved that we are dedicated to peace not because of any weakness but because we consider peace essential for the country and the world.”

Deeply touched by the tragic news of Shastriji’s demise, the then American President Lyndon Johnson remarked that “The world is a smaller place without him, and our hearts go out to his family and to the people of India.”

Expressing his deep grief, the then United Nations Secretary-General U. Thant said “Not India alone nor Asia alone, but the whole world will mourn Mr. Shastri’s passing … .. Prime Minster Shastri gave his great country guidance and leadership which helped it not only to approach with renewed vigor its immense task of social and economic improvement but also to exert with undiminished determination at the international level its influence for the good of all mankind.”
